I love Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song & Dance. I have for years, but recently I’ve been listening to it again and it resonates even more in retrospect. What could I possibly identify with in the story of a hat designer with an accent who arrives in New York City and tumbles into one bad relationship after another?
Strangely, though, I had never seen Bernadette Peters’s Tony Awards performance of the show’s big number, “Unexpected Song.” She still performs it in concerts (though she might be a bit long in the tooth for it?), but I have never before seen her sing it while ecstatically clutching a pair of red cowboy boots to her bosom. Ah, the ’80s. (Bonus points for the “prerecorded footage” that precedes her.)
