The Joys of Burton and Taylor

Liz(1)There are many things to love about the BBC America movie Burton and Taylor, set during the Broadway run of their revival of Private Lives in the early ’80s. Here are just a few!

  1. Helena Bonham Carter’s not one but two Liz Taylor voices. One scampers up and down the scales in a perfect Liz impression; the other is an approximation of the voice she used in the Broadway production of Private Lives, which prompted one critic to say she has the oddest voice this side of a Disney character.
  2. The costumes. Natch. Hat(1)
  3. Dominic West. Even as a Richard Burton who would die less than a year later, West is still heart-hurtingly attractive.
  4. The dialogue. “Everyone loved your voice,” Liz tells Richard. “Of course they did; it’s the theatrical equivalent of a big cock,” he replies. YES!
  5. The costumes. No, seriously! Turbsan(1)

Do you know if this is OnDemand?
I missed the BBC America broadcast.
    I may never forgive myself.
