Two Doors Down, Two Different Versions

Are you prepared to have your mind blown? You’re familiar with Dolly Parton’s 1978 hit, “Two Doors Down,” right? “Two doors down/ They’re laughin’ and drinkin’ and havin’ a party”? Okay, but the version you currently hear in your head isn’t the original version.

The first pressing of Dolly’s album Here You Come Again featured a more countrified version of the song (which she wrote), but before she could release it as a single, a cover version hit the country charts and stayed there. So Dolly recalled all the albums, re-recorded it (omitting a verse!) into the version you know and sing along to now, and reissued the album with it.

But here is the original, rare version, which is a little bit like when you hear a song you love in a dream and it seems ever so slightly off.

(As a bonus, here’s Dolly taking the song to a really dark, crazy place on the Cher TV special.)

And here’s the women who scored a hit with Dolly’s song before Dolly could. Can you believe?
