Real Talk: The World of Tad

Real Talk, in which I explain why we say weird things like “plugged nickel” or “cat’s pajamas.” Also, a place where I can send my boyfriend when he asks the meaning of weird phrases like “plugged nickel” or “cat’s pajamas.”

“Gee whiz, this blog is the cat’s pajamas! It ain’t fer no dumbbells or dumb Doras, that’s fer sure! Twenty-three skidoo!”

Were you aware of how many slang phrases we owe to illustrator Tad, né Thomas Aloysius Dorgan? One of those Jazz Age guys who gave women a template for style and outlook, Tad popularized, among others, “cat’s pajama’s” (“cat” was slang for flapper, and pajamas were a fairly new sartorial choice at the time), “cat’s meow,” “dumbbell,” “twenty-three skidoo,” “Dumb Dora,” “hard-boiled,” “drugstore cowboy,” “busier than a one-armed paperhanger,” and even “Yes, we have no bananas.” He’s the reason for the song!
