In the New York Times review of Tommy, Vincent Canby wrote that Ann-Margret “sings and dances as if the fate of Western civilization depended upon it.” When watching the movie, it’s hard not to believe that he was thinking of her performance during “Smash the Mirror,” when she goes go-go psycho and invents notes out of thin air. She shimmies, she does the patented Ann-Margret head turn, like an owl with eyeshadow, she runs around the room and almost trips over everything in her path but she gets the shot. This is over-the-top, lunatic perfection. It’s Friday. Treat yo’self!
