The Language of the Hunt

The following phrases that originated in fox hunting were compiled by Caroline Blackwood in her marvelously acerbic In the Pink:

in the pink (derived from the hoity-toity London tailer Mr. Pink, who cut coats for all the fashionable huntsmen)

staying power

flying start

toe the line

never putting a foot wrong

have a good day

a fast woman

prominent in his field

the brush off

to be ditched

to take cover

to be flying high
