The Silence of a Stoic

I think of this anecdote at least once a week.

“After one such occurrence, [Gwen Verdon] was sitting in the dressing room, scrubbing off her makeup when [Jack] Cole burst in and flew at her in a fury. She faced the barrage of shrieks and insults with the silence of a stoic. The other girls looked away in shame as she kept repeating, “yes, sir… yes, sir… yes, sir…” When Cole finally left and the room’s breath was released, she stood up and took her chair by the top and flung it violently against the wall.”
